Ovucheck Premate 5
Kit for the semiquantitative detection of progesterone
The Ovucheck Premate Kit is an ELISA test for the semi-quantitative detection of progesterone in serum and / or plasma samples.
In dogs, the level of circulating estrogen decreases with the increase in luteinizing hormone (LH), generally about 48 hours after the onset of the LH peak. Just before the LH hormone increase, low levels of progesterone are present in the blood, which progressively increase up to 4 and 10 ng / ml at the time of ovulation. This occurs about 11-13 days after the start of pro-oestrus, characterized by the presence of vaginal bleeding and vulvar swelling. In consideration of the considerable variability existing between the different races, it is possible to establish the precise moment of ovulation only when the progesterone level exceeds the value of the standard B (10 ng/ml). Furthermore, 12-24 hours before delivery, the progesterone level again drops to levels below 3 ng/ml. For this reason, a progesterone value higher than the value of standard A (3 ng/ml) indicates that delivery will not take place in the next 12-24 hours.
In the bitch we observe hormonal changes that occur in the course of pro-oestrus, estrus, the onset of dioestrus and gestation. At the end of pro-estro, the decrease in the levels of estrogen, secreted by the maturing ovarian follicle, causes an increase in luteinizing hormone (LH). Ovulation normally occurs 24 to 48 hours after the LH surge. The follicle gradually produces progesterone above baseline levels (<0.5 ng / mL) a few days before the LH surge. When the LH surge occurs, progesterone levels can reach 2 to 4 ng / mL.
At the time of ovulation, the progesterone level is usually between 4 and 10 ng / mL. This normally occurs 11 to 13 days after the onset of pro-oestrus (characterized by the presence of blood and swelling of the vulva).
After ovulation, progesterone levels continue to rise to peak levels 2-3 weeks after the onset of dioestrus. However, there are major differences between races and individuals.
The determination of the progesterone level with OVUCHECK® PREMATE in association with other elements such as dog behavior and vaginal cytology allows to determine the time of ovulation and therefore the optimal moment for mating. At the end of gestation, 12 to 24 hours before delivery, the progesterone level drops again to reach values below 2 ng / mL. Therefore, a progesterone level above the low standard of the OVUCHECK® PREMATE test shows that delivery will not occur in the next 12-24 hours.
